Silver Young Cyber Lions 2010

6. 5. 2010

Last week AKA  organized the local round of Cannes Young Lions‘  Cyber competition in Prague, which I find a very interesting way to work and put the creative minds under pressure. Tomáš “Bijoux” Zeman and I have attended this event to represent Symbio.
On Wednesday we showed up at AKA at around 9:20, and were surprised to see that we were the first ones. Just a few minutes before 9:30 all other teams showed up, I’ve counted a total of 13 people – 7 teams. The organizers were nice and they welcomed everyone in their office and then proceeded to briefing us.

Our task was to create a banner for
Nadace Charty 77’s  yearly art auction, where the money from selling paintings is used to help disabled students. Two banner sizes were given (468x60, 120x600) and we could choose the third one’s size (which ended up 500x500), while the technical specifications sounded like this: Banners may be SWF/GIF format, with a maximum of 18 FPS and 40kB limit. During the brief we’ve also been told that we can work from home and that we have 24 hours to send in the entries but we are not supposed to use anyone’s help or tools/code libraries from the internet.
Forty minutes of solo brainstorming followed in the tram for Bijoux and me, and after some discussion we’ve agreed on two versions: One would draw a road/surface on which a disabled person would be able to move, while the other idea was to have an extendable picture frame that would fill in with paintings as you’d drag it out. Later on the second idea was abandoned, because we’ve spend 9 straight hours doing the first one. This first idea changed from a road made of paintings to a road which features paintings and ended up as a brush which the user can control and which would “throw out” pieces of the paintings that are going to be auctioned.

After 12 hours of work without break we’ve had the final version done and we both agreed that it looks great and it gives us quite a high chance to win the golden first place, whose winners also get to the Cannes Young Lions competition.
We’ve been eager to find out the results, which were published on Thursday, but to our disappointment we’ve ended on the second place. While some of our colleagues see this position as a success, I can’t help feeling disappointed and curious about the winners’ work. What did they manage to do in 18 FPS and 40 kB? :) By this means I’d also like to congratulate them, they probably deserve the first place.

For the curious ones, here’s our work in the 500x500 format, have a look at it and let us know what you think. A few words to this banner: many of our readers will think of labuat’s  page, and might think that we’ve only tried to do a cheap copy of this page. I’d like to stress out that this page has not even been our inspiration, we’ve got to a similar idea by our own. Really. Next year tho, fellow competitors, there will be no need to watch your back, watch us, we’ll be in front :).
